  • Speed limits are 50kph in built-up areas, 90-100kph on main roads and 120-140kph on motorways.
  • Seat belts and warning triangles are compulsory and Seat belts must be used in both front and back seats
  • Trams have the right of way.
  • Headlights must be switched on at all times.
  • If you break Polish driving laws you should be prepared to pay an on the spot fine in cash in Polish currency to the police.
  • Using a mobile phone while driving (unless ‘hands free’) is banned.

Taxis

are available in all main towns. You can usually find them at ranks or order them by phone. There is a surcharge (rate 2) from 11pm-5am and for journeys out of town, as well as at weekends. Taxi drivers are not normally tipped, unless the driver has been helpful

Public transport

means bus and tram services (and also subway in Warsaw). Tickets are available in all towns at newsagents, ticket machines and some buses allow the purchase of tickets on board. Look for a sign reading ‘Bilety’ (tickets). There are different types and prices of tickets in each city. Most public transport operates from 5 am-11pm; night buses, in the major cities, run from 11pm-5am.

Public transport tickets must be validated at the start of a journey. You will be fined on the spot if you are travelling with an invalid ticket. If you think you may qualify for a discounted fare (eg student or older person) always double-check the rules as some cheaper fares may only be available to Polish nationals. You’ll be fined if you travel with a reduced fare ticket that you’re not entitled to.

Rail:

There are different types of train (regular, fast, express) and class. The comfort of first-class travel is not very different from second-class, while ticket prices may vary significantly. Some trains require booking a seat (reservations can be made at train stations in Poland).

All large train stations have left-luggage rooms open round the clock where you can store your bags for up to 10 days.
